Who Can Perform Remote Online Notarization?

Any commissioned notary public with a valid notarial commission in Louisiana, including licensed attorneys, can conduct remote online notarizations.

Requirements for Remote Online Notarization

  • The notary public, the individual requesting notarization, and any witnesses must communicate simultaneously through an electronic device, such as a webcam or video call. RON cannot be conducted solely via telephone.
  • The notary must “reasonably identify” the individual, typically by verifying their identity with a valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. If the individual is known to the notary, this should be noted in the recording.
  • An audio and visual recording of the notarization process must be created by the notary or an agent. This recording must be retained for at least 10 years from the date of execution. For guidance on recording your screen during a video call, visit the following resources:

How Does Remote Online Notarization Work?

If you’re not using a commercial RON service, set up a video call with the individual requesting notarization. Ensure the entire process is recorded and that you can clearly see the individual. After confirming their identity, they can sign the document electronically, which holds the same legal weight as a handwritten signature.

If the individual is using an electronic signature, ensure you can view their screen while they sign. This may limit your options for video conferencing if they are using the same device for both the call and signing.
